What To Expect

Your period will usually return within about three days of stopping treatment, although timing can vary between individuals. Some spotting or breakthrough bleeding can still occur while you are taking norethisterone, as it does not guarantee complete prevention of bleeding. Norethisterone is intended only for the temporary postponement of menstruation — it is not a contraceptive and will not protect you against pregnancy.

Many patients use this service ahead of holidays, weddings, exams, travel or religious occasions.

When To Take Treatment

The usual licensed regimen is one 5mg tablet taken three times daily, starting at least three days before your expected period. Always follow the instructions provided by your prescriber or pharmacist rather than changing the dose yourself.

How Norethisterone Delays Your Period

Norethisterone is a progestogen medicine used to postpone menstruation. It maintains hormonal support to the lining of the womb, helping to prevent the usual menstrual bleed while you are taking it. It should be started at least three days before your expected period, and a pharmacist consultation will help determine whether this treatment is suitable for you.

Side Effects & Safety

Possible side effects include spotting or irregular bleeding, breast tenderness, headache, nausea, mood changes or fluid retention. Your pharmacist will review your medical history and current medicines before treatment and explain what to expect.

Seek urgent medical attention (call 999 or go to A&E) if you experience symptoms that could indicate a blood clot (venous thromboembolism, VTE), including:

  • Swelling, pain, redness or warmth in one leg (usually the calf)
  • Sudden breathlessness or rapid breathing
  • Sharp chest pain, which may be worse when breathing in
  • Coughing up blood
  • Sudden severe headache, vision changes, weakness, numbness or slurred speech

You should also contact your pharmacist or GP promptly if you notice unexpected or heavy vaginal bleeding, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), or any other new symptom that concerns you while taking this medicine.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

Norethisterone is not suitable for everyone. Your pharmacist will assess your individual circumstances during consultation, and treatment may not be appropriate if you have, or have had, any of the following:

  • A current or previous blood clot (VTE), such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism
  • Significant VTE risk factors, including obesity, recent surgery, prolonged immobility, smoking, or a family history of clotting disorders
  • Liver disease or a history of significant liver problems
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding that has not been investigated
  • Pregnancy or suspected pregnancy
  • A hormone-dependent cancer, such as breast cancer, or certain other reproductive cancers
  • Breastfeeding — tell your pharmacist if this applies to you

You should also tell your pharmacist about all other medicines, including hormonal contraception, that you use, as these may affect whether treatment is suitable.

Period Delay Questions, Answered (FAQs)

Whether you are planning a holiday, wedding, religious trip or another important event, these answers explain how period delay treatment works, who it may suit and how to access professional advice.

Norethisterone is a licensed UK medicine used to delay menstruation. It is normally started at least three days before your expected period, and a pharmacist must assess your health and suitability before treatment is supplied.
Side effects vary between individuals. Norethisterone can be suitable for many people when prescribed appropriately, but your medical history, current medicines, pregnancy status and risk of blood clots must be assessed first.
Norethisterone is the medicine commonly prescribed in the UK for postponing menstruation. Whether it is suitable for you depends on your health, current medicines and individual circumstances, which your pharmacist will assess during consultation.
Norethisterone is a prescription-only medicine that can be used to postpone menstruation. It is licensed in the UK for this purpose and should be used according to your prescriber's instructions.
Norethisterone maintains progestogen activity that postpones menstruation while you continue treatment. Your pharmacist will explain the expected timing and how to take your prescribed medicine.
This depends on your expected period. The licensed regimen for norethisterone starts at least three days beforehand. Always follow the instructions provided by your pharmacist or prescriber.
Norethisterone is a prescription-only medicine. You need an appropriate clinical assessment and prescription before it can be supplied — it cannot be bought over the counter.
Yes. Norethisterone is not a contraceptive and does not protect against pregnancy. Use a suitable method of contraception if you do not wish to become pregnant, and discuss your circumstances during consultation.
Emergency contraception can sometimes change the timing of your next period, making it earlier or later than expected. This is separate from period-delay treatment, so speak with a pharmacist if your period changes after taking emergency contraception.
Hollowood Chemists provides a pharmacist-led period delay service, both online and in branch. A consultation will assess your suitability before treatment is supplied.
The cost depends on the duration selected. Current Hollowood pricing is £15.99 for a 10-day supply (30 tablets) and £21.99 for a 17-day supply (60 tablets). Supply is subject to clinical assessment and prescription, and availability of specific brands may vary.
